Last weekend, me and my best gal pals took a little jaunt up to the beautiful city of Edinburgh. We planned a weekend of sightseeing, shopping, eating and plenty of wine. So full of excitement and egg and bacon baguette (yum) we boarded our plane and off we went.
Every time I have been to Scotland, which is a lot, the weather has been kind to me, so imagine my abject horror at arriving to clouds lower than the gusset on an old pair of tights and rain lashing horizontally. We vowed to make the best of the situation so made our way to the city centre, ready to do some serious sightseeing.
After dropping our bags off at the hostel, we decided our first port of call would be the Castle.
It sits atop a giant rock overlooking the city and is usually filled with tourists admiring the view or waiting for the One O'Clock Gun. As the weather was so hideous, the castle was fairly quiet so we strolled around soaking up the history, with a few silly pictures thrown in for good measure.
After suffering the elements for several hours, we decided it was time to find somewhere to have some hot food and a big mug of coffee. As we are all Harry Potter crazy it would have been rude not to visit The Elephant House. I had a baked potato with tuna which came with a fantastic side salad (that might be the first time I have ever called a side salad fantastic) and the girls had quiche, cake and some stromboli, which were all equally yummy.
Now warm and with full bellies, it was time to tackle the National Museum of Scotland which has one of my favourite exhibits and is most definitely worth a visit, especially if you have children. Cue more silly photos and getting annoyed at people taking too long with the interactive parts, you would never believe we were all 23 or 24!
Having been up since 6am, travelled and walked around what seemed like the entirety of Edinburgh, we decided for go for a late dinner rather than go out out. On a recommendation from Elle magazine which Mia cleverly spotted, we decided to go to The Dogs. The restaurant was upstairs in what can only be described as someone's dining room. It was moodily lit with more tables and chairs squeezed in than I thought was possible. The menu was simple and very well priced and we all spent an age deciding what to go for. I changed my mind about 10 times but in the end plumped for the steak and chips (why break with tradition) and boy was it good. Now a proper blogger would insert some food porn here but by the time we ate I had consumed a large amount of wine and was thoroughly ravenous, so had inhaled my food before realising I hadn't instagrammed it. Doh!
All in all a jam packed first day in the 'Burgh, part 2 to follow.
